5 ingredients I won't touch with a 10 foot pole

As my clients will contest I get extremely passionate when I get to the “Controversial Ingredients” session in our program.  It is extremely easy to fall into the trap of processed food companies and there are some pretty nasty artificial, synthesized, and even poisonous ingredients that they using. Which is why it is so important to be an educated consumer. Together we can take a stand against big food companies who care more about our dollar then they do about our health.  Here are my top 5 food ingredients that I won’t touch with a 10 foot pole.

1)  Artificial Sugars- As a once diet food and diet sugar addict I can look back now and see what a disservice I was doing to my body. The blue, pink and the yellow sugar packets are toxic, cancer-causing chemicals which usually do the opposite of what they promise which is to make you skinny. Instead they cause a laundry list of disorders and diseases, which range from skin rashes to anxiety and are now linked to dementia. Oh and did I mention they make you crave more sugar and cause hunger pangs?

2)  Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)- This flavor enhancer is tucked in most processed food usually under some disguised name such as Autolyzed Plant Protein, Calcium Caseinate or Natural Flavoring. It can cause weight gain, dizziness and digestive, coronary and respiratory issues. If you want to see the effect MSG is having on mice Google it, will blow your mind.

3)  High Fructose Corn Syrup- Sugar is sugar yes but high fructose corn syrup is just plain toxic and reeks havoc on your body. Research shows that HFCS worsens diabetes, causes metabolic syndrome, speeds up the aging process and even contains high levels of mercury. They are much healthier and safer ways to get your sweet fix. It’s almost watermelon season.

4)  Partially Hydrogenated Oils- Aka, Trans Fats. BEWARE.  This is a man-made fat  and is created by reacting different oils with hydrogen, reducing the good fats and leaving the bad. These oils can be made into a solid which is why they are used to enhance appearance and give processed foods a longer shelf life then we do.. Trans fats are associated with high levels of bad cholesterol, breast and colon cancer and heart diseases.

5)  GMOS- Just say no to GMOs. Since the 90’s we have been lab-rats for one of the biggest food experiments of our time. GMOS- Genetically modified organisms are plants or animals (primarily soy, corn, cotton, and canola) that have had their DNA modified. In a nutshell they have taken the DNA of different species and combined them with other species creating genes that don’t actually occur in nature. GMOs have never been proven safe and are in most if not all big food company’s processed products. GMOS put our food supply at risk, are hurting our environment and have serious health consequences. Autoimmune, gastrointestinal and infertility issues are tied to GM foods. You can take a stand against being a test subject by only buying NON-GMO processed food products and asking your government officials for mandatory labeling of GMO-containing foods.

All in all there are a couple things to keep in mind to be a smart consumer. Always check labels, if you can’t pronounce the ingredient name or it has more than five syllables you probably don’t want to be eating it. And lastly, if it is made in a plant try not to eat it, if it is a plant do!  I challenge you to take a stand and feel empowered about what you choose to put in your precious body! Shine On!
